Found the Import pages on the wiki..

and added stub rows for Arezzo, Falkland Islands, Sudan, Merano (could the
importers fill in the details here please)

Are there any other imports not listed there.

Under Import/Software, we can start gathering information particularly about
importing shapefiles.

Cristiano
has
imported
the
data
freed
in
Merano
in
November,
which
followed
a
similar
conversion
path.
Might
be
some
reusable
tools
there?

The
main
trick,
as
I
understood
it,
was
to
convert
the
Shapefile
data
model,
which
is
list
based,
into
the
network
model
of
OSM.
That
means
finding
intersecting
streets,
and
have
the
Way
reference
a
common
Node.
Also,
convert
directly
into
the
OSM
format,
and
upload
via
JOSM
--
this
allows
a
manual
check
on
the
data
and
preserves
all
the
tags,
etc.

Now
that
we've
had
3
or
4
imports
from
Shapefiles,
we
should
at
least
start
to
collect
knowledge
in
the
wiki,
if
not
build
some
generic
tools
to
help
this
process.

How
to
import
shapefile
into
OSM

Hello,

as
a
result
of
the
1st
Italian
Mapping
Party
we
have
some
geodata
freed
by
the
Municipality
of
Arezzo.

The
data
is
in
ESRI
shapefile
format,
any
suggestion
to
convert
it
into
OSM?
We
need
to
open
it
in
JOSM
before
upload.

I
already
managed
to
reproject
into
WGS84
and
eventually
convert
into
GPX,
but
in
this
way
I
lost
the
tags,
e.g.
highway
names.

It
seems
to
me
that
the
TIGER
import
scripts
are
too
TIGER-centric.

Happy
Mapping!
