Have you got a card in the microSD slot? If so, you can either pull it out and stick it in a card reader, or else you can set the GPS to USB mass storage mode. Either way then just drag the file over to the right place. (My Venture Cx needed a firmware upgrade to enable the mass storage mode, but it's worth it to save fiddling with the microSD card)
Be careful with way linux handles writing to disk - you really do need to unmount it cleanly. I spent many hours transferring the maps and not working out why it didn't work before I realised how aggressively it was caching the writes to the SD card. (Kubuntu) You don't need sendmap or any other utility for this.
