To be honest I think there'll be a sweet spot of height-colouring, shading and contours combined. Shading will give the shape of the hill, colouring for an overview of the height, contours for actually counting metres... But the main think is that there is currently only working code for contours, which I worked on a few weeks back and Steve has added to. If someone wants to step up and write some code for converting .hgt.zip -> coloured tiles and/or shaded tiles then that would be great.
