The upcoming Kosmos 2.0 will include contours generating tool.  Then you'll be able to generate and host map tiles with contours data by yourself. I'll be posting news about the new version here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Kosmos#Future_Releases

This tells you how contour rendering has been implemented on the piste map 
and cycle map.
