I post this reply in case it might be of value to other OSMappers. Following Simone Cortesi's advice to use an appropriate download program, I used Free Download Manager to download the Europe zipped .img file, and it worked without a hitch. I now have it displaying on my Garmin Legend HCx perfectly.
