There is an extract of NZ at http://downloads.cloudmade.com/oceania/new_zealand which is 6.6MB compressed Alternatively, you can use the OSMXAPI to download chunks of data defined by a bounding box (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Xapi) which allows for larger boxes than the standard API... d
