The Garmin eTrex Legend HCx was what we went for for running mapping parties and they are very popular with attendees. Very easy to use, has a high sensitivity receiver (a must), displays OSM mapping, logs a new track file to the SD card every day, will run all day on a pair of AA rechargables (2500mhA and above). Plus all the other features of ruggedness, waterproof etc etc. At £138 on Amazon including the SD card you actually get a lot of bang for your buck.
