I have to admit to feeling very envious when I see the beautiful, crisp, high-resolution aerial photographs that the People's Map guys are able to use. It's such a waste that they have retreated into their own closed-off corner rather than collaborating with OSM.
I can't see why someone would volunteer time for this project, but they do seem to be making some progress: <http://peoplesmap.blogspot.com/>.
