Agreed that Maplint is not the most up-to-date tool but you can display maplint tiles in Potlatch, which is more than can be said of most other debugging tool with the exception of the nonames layer. So unless and until keepright & co produce proper tiles that can be loaded into Potlatch I'd opt for retaining Maplint.
