I think the eTrex series is generally pretty robust. I (used to) frequent the geocaching.com boards and saw a lot of complaints about various units, but the eTrex design has been around for a while and is fairly bulletproof. Obviously cases like yours are the exception, but the common complaints about the eTrex construction (when there are any) are the surrounding "rubber band" separating from the unit (happens more when exposed to temperature extremes) and a loose/disconnected screen ribbon cable (only on older models).
