Re: tiger data, blame me Hi all, I'm working on a good rebuttle, accept each draft is an essay driving home a point. ;-)
Here it is; For ALL GeoBase and CanVec data, we are treating it as a "sub-class OSM mapper" we create a new login id for it, separating the regular mapper with the "sometimes obnoxtious" mapper of the geobase/canvec import. We are using AutoMATCH, from OpenJUMP and a nifty script, to make the import as less 'intrusave' as possable. We firmly believe that YES, the geobase & CanVec Data is good, BUT it doesnt top someone physically on the ground observing the conditions. What we do is leave it up to the person who made the tracks and manually traced the features to decide on what todo. Myself & SteveS and the others working on it, provide the 'system' and the 'tools' for the local area mappers to physically view & preview the data before importing it. Yes, this method does take a REALLY long time todo, however it handles the number 1 fundemental of OpenStreetMap - respect other mappers work & communicate directly with them if you are unsure of why the features were mapped a certain way. Through discussions you can find out reasons, and ask others for logic & facts. If no agreement is found, we delete the geobase/canvec feature in favour of the local OSM mapper. ~Until i am physically on the ground seeing the area im person; i have no way of arguing counter to what the mapper says to be true. We have the origional geobase data, and can use it to be 'viewed' or 'traced'. Remember the purpose of making a map; So anyone from anywhere on the planet can print the map, go to the area & navigate based on common symbols and line types that are easily understood. In otherwords, the entire OSM map is in constant need of revision, it will NEVER be complete, as it will always take on the ground observations - there is always construction and map features changing - thats what makes it fun :-) I hope that helps, im happy to further explain my points. cheers, Sam Vekemans Across Canada Trails _______________________________________________ talk mailing list [email protected] http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
