I'm not sure what software you're using with your G1 however I've had reasonable success with AndNav2 (now available on the market), I like the fact that you can see the OSM maps while your driving around, so if you see a road is missing you can optionally detour specifically for it, as well as the ability to add poi's on the sport and report bugs.
