For example a sweeping curve may be drawn in OSM with a node every meter, taking 100 nodes. When in reality it is derived from GPS data with 6m accuracy. Distilling this down to a way which is 'not more than 5m away' from the original might save a considerable amount of space. You can also strip out all of the data/tags which you are not interested in rendering. Obviously you would not want to upload any of this 'tainted' data back into the OSM database.
