In the USA there are large areas where activities like logging are prohibited at the federal level: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Wilderness_Preservation_System http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._Wilderness_Areas Many states provide similar protections to areas as well.
