Well, my thought was to have the camera plane at all times perpendicular to the vertical axis, i.e. a weight mounted on the gimbal somehow. I know that a certain amount of correction can be performed on the images, but I think it is better to have as accurate photos as possible, that are known to be in a direction towards the center of the earth.
