For those with large printers/plotters (though there may not be many on the ground) I am doing large PNGs regularly, at labs.geofabrik.de/haiti/large-png-maps. Suitable for an A0 size printout. It's the same you would get from the export tab on the main osm site just that the export tab won't let you do that size (about 15k by 10k pixels).
