Hi Sam, Sorry, I think I missed the point of your question - I thought you wanted something automatic to save having to move things manually.
When I have just wanted a quick map with a few additions I have just used osmarender and inkscape (I actually use the perl version of osmrender because it seems to work more quickly for me). I think I turned the osmarender SVG file into a png 'canvas' to draw on. Can OpenOffice not read the SVG files to let you do the same? Graham.
