Some news about Taginfo ( http://taginfo.openstreetmap.de/ ):
Thanks to the new binary OSM format (PBF) thats much faster to work with, Taginfo can now be updated daily. It needs about an hour every night to keep a local planet file current (with Osmosis) and then another about 2,5 hours to update the statistics that Taginfo needs. The latter is done with a C++ program I wrote that now supports the PBF format. The Taginfo web pages show a timestamp of the last update. Because of caching you might sometimes see data from the previous day. The second news is the wiki integration. If you go to a wiki page describing a key or tag (such as http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:highway or http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=residential ) you´ll see some statistics from Taginfo in the infobox on the right. (Technically this is done through a special Mediawiki plugin developed by Grant that creates an iframe. This is embedded in the templates that create the infobox.) This way its quick and easy to see directly on the wiki page how often a tag is used. Have fun experimenting with Taginfo and happy holidays!
