Frederick, I think you are right, and we need to find a sane way of doing things as you put it. In this case, it would have worked well to put a message on this mailing list saying that the strategic working group exists, they are charged with looking after the OSM logo among other things, and they plan to discuss it at a certain time on a certain day. So anyone who has views could express them at the meeting or perhaps before. Finally, if it is the working group that is ultimately going to decide, that needs to be made clear at the start, so that those who disagree with this way of working can talk about it then, rather than after the decision has been made and people are already committed to their positions. (In other words separate the issue itself from the meta-issue of who gets to rule on it.)
