A few Stamen colleagues and myself put this together recently:

It's pretty sketchy so far, but it's a solid and we-think-pretty-good attempt
to create a one true road query for OSM data in a way that's painlessly usable
in Mapnik, Cascadenik and Carto. It's new so let me know what you think.
