You should be able to use the XAPI frontend: http://openstreetmap.us/uixapi/xapi.html Zoom in and then hold down shift while dragging the mouse to draw a bounding box. Then check the "search by area" checkbox and copy the bbox=a,b,c,d that appears in the URL on the bottom of the page.
