One of the most important issues is how people can get there. It has to be near
an international airport. (Extra points for having an airport used by cheap
airlines such as Ryan Air). If the travel time is too long compared to the
actual conference time, people will stay away. If I have to take a long train
or bus ride after the flight, this restricts the times I can travel and/or
it might mean an extra travel day is needed which means another hotel stay
which means it's more expensive. Really large and touristy places might not be
as nice as some cute village, but they have many travel and hotel options.
