Interesting would be if the images are served from an existing TMS.
What about Mapquest Open Aerial?
That would save us from downloading 200Mb per pattern.
In Thailand there are nearly 800 patches available, some overlap and differ
in date and cloud cover. Downloading all would mean nearly 160GB.
Recompressing the images from tiff into jpg reduces the individual file
size from ~400MB down to ~15MB.
Still you would not want to open a 200 megapixel image as a background
layer on a netbook.
