I think the map at the end might just be added for illustrative purposes. They haven't used a current map in the article, because that requires a copyright license.
I've spent a long time looking at the second picture and OpenStreetMap (I should probably orientate them rather than turning my head). I'm indecisive, but it is an interesting style and perhaps not OSM. Black: roads, railways, commercial landuse, ?industrial?, perhaps the canvas is black. White: residential areas, allotments. Green: parks as you'd think. Interesting bits: * In white, a hockey pitch but what is the white area above it? and a hockey pitch http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/45336436 * In white, two sports pitches but the pitches on the other side of Vorarlberger aren't painted. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=52.4718&mlon=13.35655&zoom=17&layers=M It would help if we knew how it was made. Was it traced with a projector, or was it hand drawn referring to print outs? If we knew who did it then perhaps we could ask them. One theory I have is that the colours were chosen on the fly, in that they were copying(or tracing) from a normal map and decided if they would colour something green white or black (artistic license). Most things would be consistent, but unusual or little things they'd might forget what they had previously done or they would add some pitches but not every boring one.
