Take a look at this Google maps example from some small suburb of Tokyo:

somehow in the middle you will see a a crossroad labelled 西原自然公園前 (sorry, no English, this is read as “Nishihara Shizen Kōen Mae”). This is just it. The crossroad has a name which is displayed in the center of it. No direction or something like that.
