how large should that "larger" player be? Mapquest is a company founded in 1967 and controlled by AOL since 2000. Whom are we waiting for? Google (have their own mapmaker), apple (already using OSM to fill the gaps but giving nothing back, not even attributing correctly), bing (already pushing osm by donating global aerial imagery but AFAIK not using the data so far besides the "german military areas incident"), yahoo (they don't even link their maps from yahoo.com and the first four (!) hits in their own search for "maps" are "google maps", so not sure how serious they are still into maps).
