Eventually, yes. If someone edits in an area they're not familiar with, and the local mappers complain, and the person doesn't stop, then they might be more forcefully asked to reconsider. The difference is that in mapping from aerial imagery, people often choose a spot and work on that for a longer period, and if there are local mappers then there's likely to be contact. Someone who criss-crosses the planet on the hunt for misspelled tags doesn't usually have any investment in the local area. It's mapping by helicopter - dive in, make some noise, fly away. If they do something that's totally uncontroversial, fine, but if they do something that local mappers have an issue with, they sometimes won't even remember the name of the city where they made an edit. > Can anybody tell me why a surveyor or tracer is free to keep adding > restuarants without punishment, but a gardener should follow a long > procedure to fix that ? Surveyors have a very high standing in OSM. They are what differentiates us from the the rest. A project with just surveyors and no gardeners can work; a project with just gardeners and no surveyors cannot.
