It is not in general a problem of translation in various languages,
For many countries, no official list of localities is available. You have
either transliteration problems or asking the name of a locality to their
inhabitant, you may come with variants. While only the name is published,
adding these variants as alt_names faciliate the search through Nominatim.

Are some of these names actually names in different languages that should
be tagged name:wo and so on?
