The motivation for the "cleanup" are not quite clear, however the effect is that the original editor-imagery-index is no longer usable for me too (for example in Vespucci). But it is all open source so I've forked https://github.com/simonpoole/osm-layer-index and reverted the relevant commits. Not sure if you can simply use one of the config versions in P2 though or if it would require cooperation from Richard.
