As has already been stated, Nuance has had a version of Talks for the
Windows Mobile platform for more than a year. It was only available from
Verizon and only for two of their handsets. Furthermore, Nuance purchased
this technology from Dolphin, which had a version of Hal for the Windows
Mobile platform which had been available a few years earlier. There was talk
in the summer of 2009 that Nuance would release a version of Talks at the
end of 2009 that would be available from multiple distributors and able to
run on almost any phone running Windows Mobile. This is obviously a year
later than that talk had indicated. The development cost would have been
relatively small, and I suspect most of this involved testing and setting up
the distribution network. If Nuance's alternative was to just sit on this
and not make it available, I'm glad they chose to make it more widely
available. It does remain to be seen though how many licenses will be sold,
especially since Windows Phone 7 is supposed to be coming out next week.
