Hi Brian
While I cannot think of a resolution in relation to Talks it sounds like you
have a lot going on with regard to hearing from various sources. This
leaves me wondering if you are a Braille reader and if you would find it
helpful to use a Braille display rather than depending on the screen voice
reader in Talks. This way you could mute the speech but benefit from the
Braille display via Bluetooth. Of course these do not come cheap. Failing
that I am thinking a second phone might be helpful while you take this one
to repair to see if they can help resolve the problem. Have you deinstalled
and reinstalled Talks by any chance?
Eleanor

Subject: [Talks] Major problem with N-82
Dear Talks list,
I am having a serious issue and this message will be long, so please bear
with me.
I have been a Talks user since April '09, it being installed in my Nokia
N-82 <along with a KNFB Reader>. Although I never mastered the Reader, I
was using the cell phone with much success, especially for my practice as
a psychotherapist, which is required for emrgencies, being a liability
issue. I also did quite a bit of texting.
The problem began around mid September. While visiting a friend, I, for
first time, decided to use headphones, rathr than regular receiver, as
talking/texting was intefering with my friend's listening on her land
line. Ever since removing headphone from jack, I had intermittent
problems with getting voice to come through regular receiver despite doing
everything, as guided by my technical troubleshooter, including making
sure that enhancements were on headset default in the Settings menu.
Typically, I could not get the voice to come through the receiver except
in unpredictable, random pushing of various volume switches, including the
rocker volume switch on the side and the 'left-right' arrow keys on th
navigator key. Today, I can get nothing to come through receiver, no
mattre what I do.
I found out two days ago that the problem was most likely by using a
headphone with its own power source <Bose>, which anothr tekkie found on
the manual not to use such a headphone as it may cause damage to phone.
Thus, while I am asking for any remote possibilities for suggestions, it
appears that I will be searching for a new cell phone to re install Talks
and KNFB software. Here is my significant issue on top of all of this:
I am hearing challenged, now having bilateral cochlear implantation. I
now use two speech processers with the implants <th behind-the-ear devices
that resemble hearing aids> that include telephone-coils, or t-coils. For
those whom don't know, t-coils, used for many years on hearing aids, but
relatively new with speech processers for implants, are switches that cut
off the external microphone that pick up sound through air, and convert to
an electro-magnetic transmission of sound coming through a source such as
telephone, headphones or VR Reader, anything held to the ear and has a
compatible t-coil unit within it for t-coil compatibility, that cuts,
repeat, cuts off background noise <greatest nemesis for hearing
challenged> so user can communicate and/or listen much more effectively,
and, in my case, safely e.g. such as trying to make transportation
arrangements while on a noisy environment such as a busy athletic club.
I have been exploring other cell phones for consideration. an iPhone 4
has been suggested, but I understand it has a 'touch screen' instead of
tactile keyboard? In consideration of needing the best quality sound
coming through receivr and is user friendly with qwerti keyboard for
someone with hearing issues and lives alone and is a professional with
liability issues for emotionally challenged clients, can anyonw provide
recommendations for best phone to get that is TAlks and KNFB compatible?
Thanks so much for any consideration and, again, sorry this is long, but
really wanted to be crystal clear in describing my situation.
Best,

support team for your interest/understanding.

Subject: N-82 Update
Dear Jane, Gloria, Arthur, Gayle, Graciela and Rob,
Well, I wanted to update. Matters are worse.
This morning, Nokia N-82 is in worse shape now that nothing coming through
receiver, even aftr frantic attempts to push various buttons, especially
volume buttons <which made sound come through before>. I can't get
anything to come through receiver.
Furthrmore, and I didn't mention this before as it seemed relatively
insignificant in the angst state of just trying to get sound of receiver
of cell phone, the home page screen is all screwed up. Before, when the
home or 'today' screen came on, it would announce 'key one, Reader ... key
two, calendar', but now it announces 'key one messaging ... key two maps'.
As I have no clue how to refigure the icons, and it being irrelevent with
my greatest need, I haven't even attempted to deal with this. I do not
want to go back to Nokia Customer Care as they are totally unfamiliar with
th software for Talks <screen reading> and KNFB <camera>, so my pessism in
dealing with someone I can't even understand <because of foreign accents>
is hundred fold.
Gayle, in your message, you mentioned that that the iPhone 4 is as good
as the iPhone 3, but did you mean the opposite, the version 3 being as
good as 4?Usually a later version is compared to an earlier one for
comparative evaluation. In any event, as noted by Eva , Audiologist,
UMass/Worcester, she said the 4 is basically only one compatible with
t-coils for speech processers in cochlear implants for those with hearing
challenges. Also, does the iPhone have a touch screen instead of qwerti
keyboard? While it is flattering and cool to have phone that many sighted
users use, you mentioned needing sighted help; where I live alone and not
much sighted help at my immediate side, wondering if this would be a
negative. I am going to send out a message to a Talks users group, which
discusses the various phones to see which would be best to also
accommodate for hearing issues as well as user friendliness. Thanks to
all and still welcoming feedback, especially the promptest way to proceed,
as I am lost without cell phone, first time it has been disabled going
back ten years <including my old fashioned, non-accommodating Motorola>.
It is crucial for my practice and functioning.
