I did a quick search on the HTC Desire in Bing, and I found a lot of reviews and specifications. This phone runs Android 2.2, so I think your screen reader options are the open source screen readers Talk Back and Spiel. Code Factory is also working on a screen reader for the Android platform.

To my knowledge, no HTC phone has a built in screen reader like the iPhone does with VoiceOver. Some HTC models, like the Ozone, do support Talks and Mobile Speak.
