As an additional point to Chris's message, sometimes there is actual
hardware differences. For example the Nokia 6650 Flip from AT&T and the 6650
from T-Mobile, I believe in the UK. Another example of a branded model is
the E73 with T Mobile USA.

Branded means the phone is running software that's been modified by or
on behalf of the phones carrier, such as AT&T. It usually means there's
some bloatware added with the carrier logo and enticements to buy into
the carriers services, not unlike buying a PC from HP, for example.
Sometimes features in Nokia's firmware for the same phone have been
modified or disabled. Sometimes this is to "enhance" the user's
experience, at least in the eyes of the carrier, but it may also be to
force you into using the carrier's service, such as a paid GPS service
instead of a free GPS application from Nokia. The N75 is a good example.
there was an unbranded N75 running stock firmware from Nokia as well as
an AT&T branded N75.

Note this isn't the same as having a phone locked to a specific carrier.
Also, some phones, like the E71X are branded to AT&T, but there's no
unbranded equivalent. The E71 for example, is actually just a different
phone, and not an unbranded version of the E71x.
