I'm curious, how do you know you've never received an emoticon in a text message? I'm not sure Talks will indicate this to you on every phone or with every SMS client.
I'd never just pick an emoticon at random, but there are other ways to send them. As Stephen says you can just use something like *smile*, "*frown* or even *sarcasm*. Since these all started before you could include graphics, they also have text based equivalents, such as :-), :-( and so on. Sometimes an email, IM or SMS client will convert such text strings into their graphical counterparts to add some color and spruce up a message. Obviously emoticons are totally optional and no one has to use them. I find they're handy when conveying humor or lightness, which sometimes is hard to convey in a text message. Also, just because I'm blind doesn't mean I don't want to make my messages visually appealing to my sighted friends.
