COLORADO - MERCURY CAFE - LIVE TANGO MUSIC Submitted by Dave Schmitz Updated schedule follows for the rest of March, plus all of April, 2000. Please note corrections.
Denver's Mercury Cafe features milongas most Friday evenings, many with live tango music. (See exception on April 21 below.) We are fortunate to have TWO bands. EXTASIS is our Denver-based quartet featuring Evan Orman on bandoneon, Erin Furbee on violin, Ken Harper on double bass, and now with Karen Eddleman on piano. Karen is the new person in the group, but definitely not new to tango, as she played on tour with Forever Tango for a couple years. In celebration of this addition to EXTASIS, Marilyn Megenity, owner of the Mercury Cafe, purchased a grand piano for the dance hall. Evan, a professional cellist and maker of violin bows, and Erin, a violinist in our Symphony, are founding members of Extasis. Ken also plays in the Symphony, and he and Evan have worked out many of the arrangements for the group. We're so lucky here in Colorado to have professional musicians with such a great interest in playing for us dancers! TANGO CAMARATA is directed by Daniel Diaz, an Argentine now living in Orem, Utah. Orem is on the other side of the Rockies from Denver, just an hour by plane or nine hours or so via I-80. Utah also has a tango scene, and Dan is now playing for our friends in Utah, but we Coloradans had the privilege of having Dan play for us first!!! Depending on the weekend, Dan is joined either by Colorado musicians, such as guitarist Matthew Heaton who has been playing tango for several years, or, by the Duo Lorca of Kansas City, consisting of Christine Brebes on violin and Beau Bledsoe on guitar. Robin Ruscio has rounded out the group on double bass. Omar has been teaching tango and milonga throughout the month of March, and has been faithfully attending all milongas, much to the delight of our tangueras. March 31 - Extasis. April 7 - Extasis.
