We want to thank all of you who have suggested names of
instructors as replacements for Rodolfo and Maria Cieri, all of which
would certainly have been qualified. We are pleased to announce that
we have invited Fernanda Ghi and Guillermo Merlo, and they have
graciously accepted. They will be teaching during Tango Week, July 10
- 14.
For those of you who know them, they need no introduction. For
those of you who are not familiar with them, the following bios will
give you an insight into their talents, and as you will see they are
eminently qualified.
Fernanda Ghi:
Born 1974 in Cordoba Argentina, a professional dancer with a
classical and modern dancing background. Her dancing studies started
in 1987 with "The Escuela Nacional de Danza" in Buenos Aires and was
nominated as one of the top five solo dancers in the newly created
"First Youth Ballet of Buenos Aires". - The ballet, which was then
nationally recognized and acclaimed, toured several countries,
including Chile,Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay. Shortly after joining
the "First Ballet Juvenille", Fernanda was awarded a scholarship to
enroll in the "Escuela Superior de Arte" (equivalent to The Performing
Arts Center) of the worldwide famous Teatro Colon.
Fernanda traveled to Paris, France and in 1991 she worked with Joseph
Lassini, a magnificent and famous choreographer, after which she
joined classical well known directors to include Madame Wube's Player
Academy, a historical and recognized dance school, Claudie Jaqueline's
Bolinine School of Dance and ultimately Maestro Bernard Dofour's Opera
Theater of Paris. Among professional ballerinas, these are the centers
for highest studies in dance.
Fernanda is held in high regard by Eric Federic and his "Etoile
D'Wallone's Opera House", with whom she was associated before leaving
Paris to embrace Argentine Tango as a full time profession. Starting
in 1993, under the direction of famous names in Tango, Fernanda's
professional and talented Tango Dancing lead her to work in
the best Tango Shows and reviews in Buenos Aires, like
"Michelangelo", "Casa Blanca", "La Veda", "La Ventana", "El Viejo
Almacen" etc. Nissan Motors Nippon and Fuji Television Corporation,
sponsored a co-production in Tokyo in 1997 entitled "Nissan Buenos
Aires Tango" where Fernanda was elected "Prima Ballerina". Since then,
she keeps a close artistic relationship with her audiences world wide,
visiting the Asian countries on an annual basis.
Guillermo Merlo:
Born 1970 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has been a professional
dancer since 1982, when he made his debut under the direction of Juan
Carlos Copes at the Condado Plaza Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The
Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and in Mexico City with the
legendary singer from Argentina, Libertad Lamarque. Guillermo was
featured in National Geographic's "Tango", where with Juan Carlos
Copes, Maria Nieves and actor Robert Duval, shared international
recognition. As a young 20 year old, Guillermo performed in Venezuela,
Spain, Germany, Belgium, Holland and England as well as in theatrical
productions and television shows in his native Buenos Aires. One of
the highlights of his dancing carreer was the performance at the
"Teatro Rex" in Argentina with the great Julio Bocca. He joined
Forever Tango in San Francisco, California on December of 1994, and
was featured in the Forever Tango USA travelling tour, originating his
roll in the acclaimed London Production.
Added to his highly successful career with the Forever Tango Company,
his dancing genius was included in the TV drama "McCallum" for the
Scottish Television Enterprises, based in London England. Guillermo
participated in the famous "Spoleto Festival 96" in Italy, where
"Forever Tango was mentioned as the festival's sensation. The
continuation of his dancing included the next season with "Forever
Tango" on Broadway.
One of his professional achievements is having received the 1997-1998
"Tony Award" as part of being associated with the "Best Tango Dance
Show"
Fernanda and Guillermo:
Late in 1997, together they produced and choreographed "Tango Dreams"
for the New York Stage, currently "Playzone Ltd" playing in Japan. The
show was in Tokyo and Osaka in August of 1998, after which, "Guillermo
and Fernanda" performed with professional dance companies, Tango Vivo
and Tangoing, among others, like The International Tango Congress, a
Miami Beach Florida Annual event.
April of 1999, Sony Productions recorded a video dedicated exclusively
to Tango in New York City,"Tango Magic"
Guillermo and Fernanda danced to the music provided by the Pablo
Ziegler Orchestra and the Gijon Kremer Trio. Famous singing artists,
María Graña and José Angel Trelles performed for this video, as well
as musicians from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, like Orpheus
and Gary Burton.
For the second year in a row, Guillermo and Fernanda dance in Canada,
performing in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa and Vancouver. After that
they will join a musical show for performances in Los Angeles
California and Seattle Washington. Fountainbleau Resort Hotel, Miami
Beach, at the IDO Ballroom World Championships, they compete and earn
the title of IDO World Champions in The Argentine Tango Division.
In the last half of 1999, they tour The Middle East, opening new doors
for Argentine tango in countries like Israel and Egypt, and later that
same year they go to Europe where first they work with the Famous
Bandoneonist , Mosalini.
The First Tango Festival in London England, receives them with a top
review " A different Couple, but they don't forget the language of
Tango"
Among other engagements, they are scheduled, as instructors in the
following:
ISRAEL 2000. They return to Israel to open the First International
Tango Festival in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, showing in their
choreographs, different histories, part of their new original work
"Tango Dreams"
