7 week notice: Labor Day Milonguero Weekend in Denver
Finally! A Triple-Milonga Weekend for close-embrace tango fanatics. Recreate the Buenos Aires experience with the Tango dancers of Colorado. Initial response to the Colorado Milonguero Weekend has been very exciting. We expect 8 - 15 visitors from each of the following tango cities: - San Francisco (Chris Nassoupoulos) - Portland (Robert Hauk) - Salt Lake City (Steven & Jane Payne) - Atlanta (Barbara Durr) Dances: - Friday and Saturday night milongas at the Mercury Cafe (9:30 - 1:45) - Sunday outdoor milonga in the elegant Cheesman Park Pavilion (6:00 - 10:00) Parties: - Saturday Brunch at the Mercury Cafe (11:00 - 2:00) - Sunday BBQ with Tango Colorado (5:00 - 7:00) Classes: - Saturday & Sunday afternoon at the Mercury Cafe (1:00, 2:00 & 3:00) - Teachers: Chris Nassoupoulos, Robert Hauk & Tom Stermitz Colorado has an active community of tango dancers that started about five years ago. Our style of dancing tends strongly toward social tango, rather than fantasy & figures. The close-embrace style is winning over a large percentage of the dancers. Our Tuesday Tango Colorado Practice gets 60 - 80 people. The Friday Mercury milonga has 80 - 120 people. The Mercury Cafe, just North of downtown Denver, closely resembles the Parakultural of Buenos Aires. The atmosphere is sultry and the close embrace is preferred by a majority of the dancers. The Cheesman Park Pavilion, about 8 blocks East of downtown Denver is very elegant in a Greek monumental way. The surface is hard, but very smooth. While the Dances are the main event, the Classes and Parties offer you and opportunity to mix with the local and visiting milongueros. Classes assume Intermediate tango skills (in other words, not for beginners). Other Details: - Events are very inexpensive, costing in the range of $6 - $9 each. - Housing by Tango Colorado members or downtown hotels or motels. - No rental car is necessary as all events are very near downtown Denver. - Impulse travellers: check out internet deals on airfares on Frontier or United which have big hubs in Denver - If you want a longer vacation, there are good tango activiites on the prior Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
