Labor Day Milonguero Style Weekend in Denver, Colorado

We will be getting over 50 visitors to Denver on Labor Day. In speaking with those who have already committed, their experience and skill level are in the Intermediate to Advanced range. They all love social tango with have a strong interest in the close-embrace tango. A high percentage of them have dance experience in Buenos Aires. The Mercury Café milongas will have 150-180 on Friday and 100 or more on Saturday, meaning that the dance floors will probably be as crowded as they are in Buenos Aires. (See below for some comments on Navigation and Vocabulary for Crowded Dances.)

One of the cool things is that certain cities (Atlanta, Salt Lake, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco) are sending groups of 8 - 15 dancers. If each city can be though of as a different neighborhood like in 1940s Buenos Aires, then this weekend will give us all an unprecedented opportunity to compare and exchange local styles and habits, not to mention the chance to "dance outside of our own harem."

Many guests will be hosted with local dancers, meaning they'll get a spare bed or couch and transportation to the milongas/classes. Hosting is becoming limited; please email me if you would still like to host or be hosted.

The Hyatt Regency downtown is very convenient (about 6 blocks) to the Mercury Café, and visitors have been able to negotiate a $65 nightly fee, even for double occupancy (there is also a tax). This hotel has prime access to the many restaurants and activities of Downtown Denver, which has undergone a revival over the past 15 years to become a very livable city.

Labor Day Milonguero Style Classes.

While the emphasis is on the milongas and parties, a number of classes will be offered in conjunction with the Labor Day weekend, presented by teachers, Chris Nassoupoulos & Caroline Peattie from San Francisco, Robert Hauk from Portland, and Tom Stermitz and Lisa Battan from Denver.

One particular benefit of the classes will be the opportunity to mix with and meet the many visitors. The classes will not work much with figures focusing instead on musicality, rhythm and authenticity. The level of dancers will be Intermediate to Advanced. Therefore, in contrast to some tango weeks, we won't have a problem with levels and the teachers will ask everyone to change partners frequently.

We have added early arrival classes which will pay more attention to vocabulary, navigation and style for those new to the close-embrace:
- Wednesday (Mercury, Denver) Rob Hauk & Tom Stermitz
- Thursday (Pearl St, Boulder) Rob Hauk & Lisa Battan

The weekend classes will emphasize musicality, rhythm and authenticity:
- Saturday (Mercury, Denver)
- Sunday (Mercury, Denver)

Prices and Expenses

We have gone out of our way to make this an inexpensive weekend. You could do all the classes and the milongas for under $60.
