I just came back from attending the American Choreography Awards with Juan Carlos Copes and Carlos Rivarola. I'm very happy to report that they and Ana Maria Steckleman won the 1999 American Choreography Award for Best Choreography in a Feature Film for the movie "Tango." The Award is given annually by the Academy of Dance on Film, a non-profit organization which is dedicated to preserving, documenting and advancing filmed dance. They have an outstanding library documenting classical, modern and ethnic dance around the world, along with other educational and research activities. The show itself was spectacular, featuring filmed and live dance numbers from some of the greatest choreographers and dancers in the world. Awards were also given for choreography in the category of television, music videos and commercials. Needless to say, Maestro Copes and Carlos Rivarola were absolutely thrilled and honored. It was really wonderful to see the dance that we love recognized by such an important part of the dance world.
