The first qualifying round in Salon Recuerdo's "Jack-and-Jill"
Tango Competition takes place this Thursday, October 19. The winning man and
woman in the nine-week competition
will receive a FREE trip to Buenos Aires with the March, 2001 A Puro Tango
Tour, which includes tuition for the Third Annual International Argentine
Tango Congress (CITA)! Each week at Salon Recuerdo, L.A.'s Thursday night
milonga, men and women will be randomly paired to dance an improvised tango.
Each week's winners will be randomly paired to compete in the semi-finals,
which will be held on January 11, 2001. The winners of the semi-finals will
be randomly paired to compete in the finals, which will be held on January
18. In all phases of the competition, the contestants will be judged on
leading/following skills, overall tango technique, musicality and
floorcraft, including conformance with line of dance. Judges will include
tango stars Carlos Copello and Alicia Monti and Gachi Fernandez and Sergio
Cortazzo. Regular partners may not dance together. Music will be chosen by
the contest administrators. During the preliminary competitions, you may
enter every week until you win. Entry is $5 per week, in addition to the $10
milonga entrance. All phases of the competition will be held at Salon
Recuerdo, Culver City Masonic Lodge, 9635 Venice Blvd. (between Overland and
Bagley/Main). Beginners' class 8 - 9 p.m.; milonga 9 - midnight; $10 per
person includes class, milonga and refreshments, including Linda's Sinful
