Upcoming workshops at the Wellington Performing Arts Centre, 36 Vivian St: There will be a series of Intermediate/Advanced workshops on Thursdays, from 7:30pm - 9:00pm, starting on the 31st May and ending on the 28th of June. Casino Rueda, or often just Rueda, is an intricate form of Salsa dancing that evolved in Cuba in 1950s by means of improvisation and practice in different Casinos and social clubs in Havana, such as El Casino Deportivo. It was later introduced to Miami with the wave of Cuban exiles who fled Cuba because of their ideological opposition to "La Revolucion." Today, from Europe to Asia, Salsa Casino Rueda has evolved into an international dance craze that is, with good reason, spreading all over the place. In La Rueda, the couples execute a variety of complex dance combinations, rapid turn patterns, and a multiple exchange of partners simultaneously and on the same beat following the leaders "call." There is always one leader, male or female, that will either call (shout out) or signal (with his/her hands) the combinations while all the couples in the circle follow. Every turn and combination has a name and most have a hand signal. It appears to be a choreographed performance to the spectator, but technically it isn't. A great thing about Rueda is that most of the moves can be used in couple (one-on-one) Salsa dancing. If you are comfortable with Salsa footwork, or even if you have done Latin ballroom dancing, you will be able to keep up with the Fundamentals classes. The Intermediate classes are for anyone who has done at least one or preferably two Rueda workshop before and is comfortable with the basic Rueda moves. Aleks has a background in various styles of dance. He has been teaching Casino Rueda in Wellington since November last year.
