Traditional (folkloric) Argentine Social Dances Unlike the Argentine Tango that is improvised, these dances are choreographed; the dancers follow set patterns. Much like the American Square-dance, the dancers follow the caller's directions. Once you learn the patterns, you will be able to dance to different musical pieces by following the caller's calls. In the Buenos Aires milongas, dancers do these traditional Argentine (folk) dances during the intermission such as the Chacarera, Gato, and Ranchera. The music is lively and upbeat. You do not need a partner to do most of these dances and either men or women can do either part. Some dances do require a partner. Pampa Cortis This internationally acclaimed artist has been seducing audiences across the world for many years, performing Argentine tango and other traditional dances of his native Argentina. Cortis was part of the highly respected Ballet Folklorico Nacional under the direction of the top Argentine Master, Santiago Ayala, as well as part of the Ballet Folklorico Argentino of Mario Machaco. He later toured Argentina and South America with his own troupe, Ballet Pampa. In tango, Pampa Cortis toured the world as dancer or choreographer of several shows, the best known of them in the USA being the show Forever Tango, which got to be a Broadway and London hit. Now, established in San Francisco, Pampa Cortis keeps performing, directing, and teaching tango and Argentine folk. His company, Tango A Media Luz, produced the shows !Asi Se Baila El Tango! In addition, the recent !Argentina Dances! Tango & Folklore will be presented for the second time in San Francisco next October.
