THE FACULTY

Juan Carlos Copes & Johanna Copes

We are pleased to present a faculty headed by Juan Carlos Copes,
the "Master of Masters," and all faculty members recognized
as outstanding dancers and distinguished teachers. All of the
faculty are known as excellent instructors in tango technique,
structure, musicality and elegance. Some of them are fluent in
English, and those who are not will be provided translators. They
will be available for private lessons. Participants will be given
priority with a previous appointment.

The career of Juan Carlos Copes clearly demarcates a before and
an after in the art of tango dancing, and his unmistakable
style still holds new ideas for those who practice this
beautiful dance. His great shows such as "Copes Tango Show",
"New Face 62", "Tangos for the World", "Tango Argentino",
"Tango-Tango", "Maria from Buenos Aires", "A Rose for Mr. Tango",
"Between Borges and Piazzolla", and "The Feeling of Tango" among
others moved audiences audiences around the world. His masterly
choreographies shine in many films, such as "Tango Baile Nuestro"
with Robert Duvall, "Un tal Funes" from Raul de la Torre, "Arena
de Tango Mio" from the BBC of London and Carlos Saura's "Tango".
Juan Carlos Copes has the merit of having made known the tango in
very important places, such as the Julliard School of New York,
Stanford University, University of Chicago, and the Sorbonne in
Paris. In addition, his pupils include artists as important as
Liza Minelli, Julio Bocca, Eleonora Cassano, Robert Duvall and
Mikhail Barishnikov. Copes dazzled his audience at the White
House on Ronald Reagan's 75th Anniversary. New York awarded him
an ACE and he shared with the brilliant Bob Fosse a Tony Award.
The New York Times awarded him the Prize to the Dance, and in Los
Angeles he received the American Choreography Award for his work
on Carlos Saura's film "Tango".

Fernanda Ghi

Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Fernanda Ghi has been dancing
since she was 8 years old. In 1987, at the age of 13, she was
enrolled in Escuela National de Danza in Buenos Aires, where her
training included all areas of classical and modern dance. The
following year, as one of the top soloists in the newly created
and nationally acclaimed First Youth Ballet of Buenos Aires,
she toured many countries of South America. Her dancing earned
her a scholarship to study at the Escuela Superior de Arte of
the world famous Teatro Colon. In 1991, Fernanda continued her
professional training in Paris at some of the most prestigious
professional dance schools and with some of Europe's most famous
classical directors and choreographers, including Joseph Lassini,
Madame Wube's Player Academy, Claude Jaqueline's Bolinine
School of Dance, Maestro Bernard Dafour's Opera Theatre of
Paris, and Eric Frederic and his Etoile D'Wallone's Opera House.
But Fernanda's heart belonged to Tango and, in 1993, she returned
to Argentina and focused her attention entirely on Tango. She
learned different styles of Tango from some of the most famous
names in Tango, such as Gloria & Eduardo, Juan Carlos Copes, and
Maria Nieves, as well as from the true milongueros Juan Bruno,
Rodolfo & Maria Cieri, Pocho Pizarro, Pepito Avellaneda and Celia
Blanco. All are recognized as the top performers and teachers of
Argentine Tango. Combined with her classical ballet and modern
dance training, she developed her own distinctive and passionate
style of dancing tango. "For me, it's life. It's my life. It's the
only thing where I feel like everything is complete. I don't need
anything more. I'm alive!" In 1997, Fernanda's career took her
to Tokyo when she was hired to star as the "Prima Ballerina" in
the Nissan Buenos Aires Tango, sponsored by Nissan Motors Nippon
and Fugi Television Corporation. It was here that Fernanda met
and worked with Yanco Inone, the choreographer and director of
Tango Dreams.

Guillermo Merlo

Guillermo was born in Buenos Aires in 1970 and has been dancing
since he was eight years old. He began studying dance in 1982:
classical ballet, flamenco, & Argentine folk dances. Early in
life as he watched his parents clear the floors in their home and
dance for hours, Guillermo thought "Wow! I want to do that." But he
also loved soccer until he realized that dancing stirred something
deep within him. "It's hard to explain...when I heard the music,
something happened to my skin." And thus he chose to give his
athletic talent and sensibilities to his dancing. That same year,
at the age of twelve, Guillermo made his professional stage debut
at the Condado Plaza Hotel under the direction of Juan Carlos
Copes. Engagements followed in Toronto and in Mexico City, where
he was thrilled to appear with the legendary Argentine singer
Libertad Lamarque. At the age of 17, Guillermo was featured
with Juan Carlos Copes, Maria Nieves, and actor Robert Duval,
in National Geographic's "Tango" documentary. By the time he was
20, Guillermo had already performed in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela,
Spain, Germany, Holland, England, and Puerto Rico, as well as in
his native country where he appeared with the great Julio Bocca at
the Teatro Rex in Argentina. In 1994, Guillermo joined the company
of a new show in San Francisco, eventually becoming a featured
dancer. Called Forever Tango, this hit show subsequently toured
the U.S. and opened to sensational critical and audience acclaim
in London the following year. In 1996, as part of Italy's world
famous Spoletto Festival, Forever Tango again garnered superlative
reviews as the sensation of that year's festival. When Forever
Tango opened on Broadway in 1997, it caused another sensation in
New York City and the spectacular dancing was hailed by critics
and audiences alike. Guillermo, along with the show's other Tango
dancer's, was thrilled to be honored with a Tony nomination for
the Best Choreography for the 1997-98 season.
