The city-wide competition of tango with style and elegance begins Friday, January 4 and continues until February 10 at 34 milongas as part of the Festival Buenos Aires Tango sponsored by the government of the city of Buenos Aires. It is open to dancers over the age of 18 who are not stage professionals. Semifinals in each milonga will be judged by a representative of each milonga and a member of the Asociacion de Maestros, Bailarines y Coreografos de Tango Argentino.
The finals will be held on three nights with live orchestras in outdoor locations: Feb 15 at Parque Lezama, Feb 22 at Parque Centennario, and March 1 at Centro Cultural Recoleta. One finalist couple will be chosen at each final competition. These three couples will represent the City of Buenos Aires in the World Championship of Tango Salon in July 2002 during the First Winter Festival Buenos Aires Tango. The prize will be a contract with the Secretary of Culture during 2002 for three performances for a total of $600 per couple. see www.festivaldetango.com.ar Pichi de Buenos Aires
