The following 3-Day weekends will be special occasions to visit
Denver. They all feature 3 or 4 milongas/dance parties, special
workshops and lots of fun dancing and socializing.
Please note that Denver is relatively inexpensive:
- We try to place many visitors with local tango dancers
- The Hyatt Regency downtown runs about $69 on the weekend
- United or Frontier often do airfare sales
(I just got a $210 round trip to LA)
Downtown Denver is really nice, with cafes, night-life and
restaurants. (Okay, so it isn't quite Montreal or Barcelona...)
(1) Feb 15 - 18, 2002: Valentine's Day/President's Day
Milonga Weekend with Omar Vega
(2) May 24 - 27, 2002: Memorial Day Weekend
2nd Annual Milonguero Weekend with Susana Miller
(3) Aug 30 - Sep 2, 2002: Labor Day Weekend
3rd Annual Milonguero Weekend with dancers from all over.
How to choose?
All these weekends emphasize SOCIAL styles of tango. Denver dancers
are not exclusive, but tend to prefer a connected, rhythmic and close
style of dancing. Our milongas are relaxed and welcoming to
intermediates and visitors.
Female/Male ratios usually run pretty close to 55/45.
We try to keep costs reasonable, and provide lots of dance time.
(1) Valentine's Day will be great if you want to have a whole weekend
to work on your milonga. Omar Vega is the master of the Tras Pie or
syncopated milonga that is all the rage in Buenos Aires.
The Friday Milonga gets hot around 10:00 and usually runs past 2:00,
so you can still work a full day Friday in Chicago and get to the
dance on time in downtown Denver.
(2) Memorial Day Milonguero Weekend will allow you to spend a whole
weekend with other lovers of the close embrace or "milonguero" style
of tango. This weekend will be more forgiving to Intermediates than
the Labor Day Milonguero Weekend. We'll probably get 60 - 80 visitors.
Dance floors will be crowded, but reasonable by US standards.
The workshops will be broadly Intermediate through Advanced levels.
Susana Miller is famous for her presentation of "milonguero" style of
tango, meaning a close & rhythmic style, similar to many milongas in
Buenos Aires. She is special for her INTERNAL sensibility.
When I watch her classes, they always brings to mind the old guys in
Buenos Aires and the way they move on the dance floor: GROUNDED,
RHYTHMIC and SENSUAL.
It isn't just a style; it is a way of moving, of feeling the music,
of being in the world. Susana is unusual in her ability to translate
that "masculine" stuff.
(3) Labor Day Milonguero Weekend is designed by dancers for
dancers... fanatic, close-embrace dancers. Last year we had 200
visitors, and the dance-floor pulsed with energy and passion! The
good dancing mind-melded through everybody.
You should expect more of the same this year.
Practice your navigation skills!
