Beginners Series in Argentine Tango at the Claremont Hotel, Berkeley, with some of the World's Best Guest Teachers In six classes we will explore the intricacies and subtleties of the world's most passionate and seductive dance, Argentine tango. Different from ballroom or other partner dances, this dance relies on improvisation, partner contact and communication and has many styles. Each class will begin with 10-15 minutes of walking and movement exercises to improve balance and posture, while playing the music from various famous tango orchestras. Classes will be held each Wednesday, 6:15 - 7:45 p.m. at the glamorous Claremont Hotel and Resort overlooking the Bay, 41 Tunnel Rd, Berkeley. The last class will be followed by a "milonga" (tango party) until 10:30 p.m. Cost: Members $40 for the 6 week series/ Non-members $50 Drop-in $10 for members/$15 non-members per single class Milonga free for class members, $10 for all others Class 1. Exercises for balance and posture. The walk. Review of the basic step, the Embrace and the Sandwichito. New material - the forward and backward "ochos" or figure 8's. Class 3. Feb. 27th. Taught by Yvonne Meissner, Amsterdam. Review of ochos, forward and backward. New Material - Cross-overs, and the "shoe shine", caressing the man's leg. Class 4. March 6th. Taught by Glenn Corteza and Stella. Review of crossovers. Communication between partners, the gentle lead and the responsive partner. Caressing the floor. Pausas. Energy transfer. Class 5. March 13th. Taught by Glenn Corteza and Stella. The Class we have all been waiting for - "close embrace," the authentic style used in the clubs in Buenos Aires. What it is and how to do it. Putting it all together with contrabody exercises. Class 6. March 20th. Taught by Jorge Nel, Miami, assisted by Stella. A taste of "milonga." Tango does not always have to be sad or sentimental.
