AN EVENING OF MUSIC, DANCE PERFORMANCE AND DISCUSSION
Why did this mysterious dance, born in the back streets of a
migrant city, steal the heart of the world twice in a century?
This evening is a celebration of Tango in music, dance and
words, tracing its roots and exploring its culture and
developments from a mix of European and folk influences to a
sophisticated music genre, filled with complex sensuality,
love and melancholy.
The introduction of signature instruments, especially the
bandoneon, the standardisation of band formats, the big dance
bands all mirror similar, but very different, musical
developments in the United States. But to survive Tango must
return to its roots and culture in Buenos Aires. We will
explore the influences that led Tango to the world in 1920's,
its demise and its re-birth in the 1980's.
Tango has many faces. Different styles of music and dance
have emerged, each one responding to the other. How does it
all merge, or does it, into the Tango that is fascinating the
world once again?
