Tango Intensive with Nito & Elba Garcma September 12-15, 2002 in Santa Barbara CA ****************************************
By now, Nito & Elba are familiar to most of you. Nito learned Tango the old-fashioned way, watching his uncle and aunt dance on a packed-earth patio in the province of Buenos Aires more than half a century ago. As a young man he polished his skills in the milongas of Buenos Aires in the '50s, danced as "bailarmn principal" with the orchestra of Osvaldo Pugliese, and later moved to Mar Del Plata, on the Atlantic coast of Argentina, where he continued to perform and teach. Supremely creative and elegant exponents of the Salsn style, Nito & Elba have, in recent years, been "rediscovered" by the younger tangueros in Buenos Aires, many of whom seek them out for individual instruction. Nito & Elba teach regularly at Club Gricel in Bs. As. and tour North America and Europe frequently for workshops and seminars. They were featured instructors at Stanford Tango Weeks, Nora's Tango Weeks, and CITA '99-2002, among others. Here in Santa Barbara, we've had the privilege of knowing and studying with Nito & Elba since 1992, and we try to host them for a workshop each time they travel to the west coast. In the fall of 2000, they wanted to do a little bit more. After some discussion, we decided to schedule a "Tango Intensive" that November. It was such an exciting and productive experience that we're about to have our third annual "Tango Intensive" this Fall. Beginning Thursday, September 12 we will have four (4) consecutive days of classes. In addition to our usual focus on Tango in the elegant Salsn style, this year Nito will introduce the "Avellaneda style" of Milonga. The plan is to cover, in a progressive fashion, everything from basic posture & walking exercises, to complicated giros & enrosques, to adornments. There will be a total of six (6) classes, each two-hours long, with some additional time scheduled for supervised practice and social dancing. Nito & Elba will also be avilable for privates, of course. All classes will be held at: Carrillo Recreation Center 100 E.
