DAY TO DAY SCHEDULE This schedule is subject to change, perhaps at the last minute, but it does reflect the activities we are planning at this time. If we make changes it will be even better! Saturday, March 15th We arrive in Buenos Aires very early in the morning. We will stay in the La Recoleta area either in apartments in a single building or in a hotel This is an elite and secure area of Buenos Aires. Everyone will be tired from the trip so we will relax during the day. Saturday night we will have a welcome dinner and see a wonderful show at one of the most renown restaurants in the world of tango, "La Esquina De Carlos Gardel". This restaurant was opened within last couple of years and is dedicated to the memory of Carlos Gardel. It is often referred to as "Esquina Carlitos" by local milongueros or "Carlitos' Corner" in English. Silvia Cespedes is one of the stars of the show. Many of you will remember that Silvia and Hugo Daniel were with us for six months teaching and performing for the Club a couple of years ago. They joined Angel G. Clemente & Rosa Collantes and Ballet Los Pampas for shows in Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, and Windsor. After dinner will go to a milonga. A little exercise is great for the digestion. Sunday, March 16th After breakfast, about 10:00am, we will go to the San Telmo market. San Telmo is one of the barrios where tango originated. Artists, dancers, and musicians gather in the market each Sunday to celebrate tango. We can shop for tango souvenirs, dance in the plaza, and see the shows in the street. We will have dinner in Casantonio in the heart of San Telmo. Our friend, Antonio, and his family owns the restaurant. They will prepare a very special dinner for us. Francisco Santapá, one of the most renown milongueros in Buenos Aires, will join us for dinner. On Sunday night we will attend the Grand Opening Show of CITA 2003. This is an international event organized each year by our dear friend and Club mentor, Fabian Salas. The Grand Opening will feature incredible performances by world class professionals. After the show we will proceed to "Club Banco Provincia". This is one of the most famous tango clubs in Buenos Aires. Amy danced at this club in her teenage years. Banco Provincia is only open on Sunday nights and we need special reservations. We will invite a few of the local milongueros, including Francisco, to join us for the milonga. Monday, March 17th Sleep late and have breakfast in bed, Amy's treat! We will spend the day exploring the city. We will attend an afternoon milonga at La Confiteria La Ideal. Part of the movie, "The Tango Lesson", was filmed at this confeteria. We will have dinner at one of the most renown pizzerias in Buenos Aires. It is on Corrientes Avenue. A famous tango was named for this street also. We can choose from 49 different varieties of pizza and have San Pedros for dessert. We will meet Luis Sava, director of "Quinteto Tipico Buenos Aires". We are planning to bring this orchestra to our 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 17th next year. Tuesday, March 18th After breakfast we will shop for shoes and music, or if you prefer, relax in the hotel. Attending another afternoon milonga will be optional. In the evening we will have dinner and see a show at Homero Manzi. Homero Manzi is one of oldest tango bars in Buenos Aires. The building has been declared an historical landmark by the city. Many milongueros who are now world renown still frequent Homero Manzi. The show is continuous. You will recognize some of the stars. Wednesday, March 19th We leave Buenos Aires for a trip to Cataratas Del Iguazú. This is a short flight to the border of Argentina and Brazil. We will spend the remainder of the day and have dinner at the beautiful Sheraton Iguazú. There is an magnificent view of the Falls from the Sheraton dining room. If you can imagine Niagara ten-fold, this is Iguazú. After visiting Iguazú you may never feel the urge to see Niagara again. Thursday, March 20th We will spend the day on the Argentine side of the Falls. It is best to experience both sides of the Falls. Argentina has the Falls and Brazil has the View. We will take sightseeing excursion by train on the Argentine side. One of the many sights will be "Garganta Del Diablo" ("Devil's Throat"). In evening we will have dinner on the Argentine side. Friday, March 21st This is the day that we will explore the Brazilian side of the Falls. We will also have an excursion on this side of the Falls. For the more adventuresome there is a trip on the river in a large raft to get close up and personal with the Falls. In the evening will have a relaxing dinner at a rather unique restaurant, a Brazilian parrillada! Saturday, March 22nd Return to Buenos Aires. We will spend the afternoon walking and visiting the cantinas in the port city of La Boca, the birthplace of the tango. A trip to Buenos Aires would not be complete without a walk down Caminto. One of the most famous tangos is named for this street. You will meet artists, dance, and enjoy performances in the street, and shop of course. Caminito is lined with artists displaying a myriad of art forms, i.e. paintings, sculptures, and more. In the evening we have dinner in a cantina in La Boca. On the way back we will visit the old neighborhood of San Telmo. This is the area of the famous shows La Ventana, El Viejo Almacen, and Casa Blanca. We can attend La Trastienda, a favorite milonga of Fabian Salas. Sunday, March 23rd We depart Buenos Aires for a day and night in General Belgrano and on to Mar Del Plata. We will travel via luxury bus. General Belgrano is about 2 1/2 hour drive south of Buenos Aires. We will stop at an estancia (ranch) and enjoy a parrilla (barbecue) organized by Amy's family. General Belgrano is Amy's home town. We will have our own show and you will be the stars Amy's family and friends are eager to see you dance tango. They will also participate in the show. Amy's nephew, Alejandro, and his partner, Barbara, will dance folklore and teach chacarera. They are planning to be with us for our 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 17th, 2003, at the beautiful Caboto Club in Windsor. Eduardo Tami and Marino Castro will join us in General Belgrano. Claudio Fortes and Mariana Gonzalo will also join us in General Belgrano, participate in our show, and travel with us the following day to Mar Del Plata. Monday, March 24th, through Friday, March 28th We will spend the week in the beautiful city of Mar Del Plata on the Atlantic coast. December through February is the high season, so March is the perfect time for us to be there. The weather is still fantastic, warm days and cool nights, and the crowds are diminished. We will rest, walk, shop, and enjoy the milongas. It will be a completely different experience. Mar Del Plata is Buenos Aires without the hustle and bustle. You can sunbathe on the beach all day and dance tango at night. If you prefer, you can walk on the coast for miles and enjoy the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. We will dance tango on a patio by the beach. Tango in the moonlight by the ocean. How romantic! We will have 10 hours of group lessons during the week taught by Claudio, Mariana and Gustavo Funes, lots of colgadas! We will spend day at Cabaña Inaqulen, famous for European pastries. In the future we (Amy & Ray) plan to have a place to go to escape the Michigan winters. This place will be Mar Del Plata. It will also be your "rincon de tango". Saturday, March 29th We will reluctantly bid farewell to Mar Del Plata to return to Buenos Aires via luxury bus for the long trip home.
