This Thursday, July 22, 12:00 noon, The Untattooed Lady, Lucille, one of the
few extant here in the East Village, offers visitors to the 4th Summer TANGO
FESTIVAL a tour beginning at Astor ("Piazzolla") Place --the tour is
entitled:
³LUCILLE'S QUIRKY EAST VILLAGE WALKING, CHATTING AND CHEWING TOUR².
Lucille, a long-time resident, will show off her ethnically, culturally, &
architecturally varied community--
It is beyond belief the famous people who have lived, performed, spoken,
worked and drunk here--
Just a few famous figures: ASTOR PIAZZOLLA,* Abraham Lincoln, Frederick
Douglass, Mark Twain, REBECCA SHULMAN, Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono,
FABIENNE BONGARD, Margaret Sanger, Leon Trotsky, Peter Stuyvesant,
VALERIA SOLOMONOFF, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Charlie Parker,
BRIGITTA WINKLER, Brendan Behan, among an astonishing number of others.
The tour starts at 8th and Lafayette Sts, at Astor Place, 12:00 noon, in
front of Starbucks, and next to the #6 IRT Subway exit.
RAIN OR SHINE.
The chewing will take place in a quirky eatery around 1:15.
Astor Place was named after John Jacob by mistake.. We may have a renaming
ceremony at this time.*
You'll visit historic sites within a few blocks,
Pay homage to the place where Piazzolla lived,
See one of the quirkiest garden structures on earth,
Get a quirky souvenir from a quirky, kitsch-packed eatery,
Peek in some quirky shops,
Pop into one of the most famous old-timey Italian pastry shops,
----and more, all within a few square blocks.
It will be leisurely, fun, and probably informative.
Many buses and subways go there.
At 3:00, for those interested, Lucille guides you back to the subway and
down to a Hit and Run milonga on the Staten Island Ferry. It is, according
to Lucille's Genuine Hit and Run Rules that we just hit and run and if the
authorities come after us, we just may have to run or in this case, swim to
shore.
Free for those in full festival package. $10 for all others. Cost of
chewing not included. Reservations for the tour helpful.

*Thanks to Rodolfo Windhausen who led me to one of Piazzolla's NYC homes
just 2 blocks from where we start.
And for heaven's sake, take some of those wonderfully individualistic and
imaginative classes Gayatri has organized for you!!!!
